#8: His War on Plants

Although Franklin had love in his heart for all living things, when it came to plants he took a bit more consuming approach. He never saw a plant that he didn’t want to chew on, eat, or play with. This proved challenging for Anna’s gardening, and especially so because Franklin tended to compete with the plants for valuable windowsill space. When we first got him we had a few plants sitting on the windowsill in our living room.

One by one they either fell (mysteriously) or were slowly devoured, cut down until they died. Of course, having nothing to do with this awful tragedy, Franklin did take advantage when we finally had to remove the pots and free up the window for his daily viewing of the street below.

Franklin liked to nibble, much like a farmer with a blade of wheat in his mouth, surveying his crops. He seemed to enjoy most the dead leaves and would even pick them up off the ground. Of course, these were the leaves that he was most likely to throw up later, but as they passion comes with a price. Franklin nearly succeeded in taking out our Money Tree and absolutely loved giving it a little nibble when we were sitting on the couch but once it got put on a high bookshelf it was out of his reach.

Franklin’s love for plants translated to the outdoors, and when he got to run around Anna’s parents’ backyard it was like his dream come true. I think he would have loved to have a garden. It’s nice to think of him hopping around a garden now.

Love,

Anna and Garrett
